Horse training, development, & sales

Develop the horse, not just the task.

I love developing horses—especially young horses, horses returning from injury, and horses who are telling us that something about the current plan is not working.

My training combines thoughtful horse development with a physiotherapy lens. I look beyond whether the horse can perform the exercise and ask whether they have the strength, coordination, confidence, understanding, and capacity to do it well.

The goal is to develop horses who are capable in body and mind—and prepared for the work ahead.

Thoughtful Development Takes Time

Good training is more than teaching a horse what to do.

Strength, balance, coordination, confidence, fitness, and understanding develop through appropriate repetition, progressive challenge, recovery, and time.

That means I am continually asking:

  • What is this horse showing me?

  • What does the job require?

  • What can the horse comfortably do today?

  • What needs to be stronger, clearer, or more coordinated?

  • Is the current training building capacity—or simply testing it?

  • What needs more time?

This is the same thinking that shapes the Ride Well Method.

Build the horse before testing the performance.

Sales + Horse Development

Shelley Thomas Performance partners with Khaleesi Acres in breeding, developing and preparing select horses for sale.

My role goes beyond getting a horse ready to show. I want to understand the horse, develop the physical and mental skills they need for their next job, and help identify the type of rider and environment where they are most likely to thrive.

Sales horses may be developed through training, physiotherapy, conditioning, and thoughtful management before being offered through Khaleesi Acres.

Horse-development and rehabilitation programs are based at Khaleesi Acres in Eagle, Idaho.

Working with horses in a training environment allows me to observe them over time—not just during a single appointment.

I can see how they respond to training, workload, recovery, rider influence, management changes, and progressive demands.

That ongoing observation is an important part of how I develop horses.
